SpillContainment

Guide 04 / BP

Berms and pallets

Portable containment covers jobs that move: drums in a workshop, a tanker at a field site, equipment during maintenance.

Spill pallets and decks

Pallets and decks sit under drums and totes with a sump below a grate. They suit indoor storage and dispensing areas where a built bund is not practical.

Collapsible and drive in berms

Berms with foam or frame walls unfold around a truck, tank or piece of equipment. Drive over walls let vehicles enter and leave without lifting anything.

Ground and weather

Set berms on level, clear ground and protect the floor from punctures with a ground mat. Outdoors, rain fills a berm quickly, so plan how to inspect and remove water.

When to build instead

If storage stays in one place for years, a built and lined bund is often easier to maintain than portable gear that wears out.

Common inspection findings

  • Overloading a pallet sump
  • Berms on sharp gravel without a ground mat
  • Walls left folded after a vehicle moves
  • Rainwater left standing for days
